West Footscray

A previous poorly planned extension was removed to make way for this compact, but open and bright addition to a family home. Many of the timbers used were recycled eg. the old hardwood rafters were up-cycled into a stunning timber benchtop / table, the flooring is all recycled and the timber battens outside were reclaimed from demolition. The wharf decking & pergola is made from sustainably grown cypress pine. And the owners have now disconnected entirely from the gas network, not only saving on running costs, but also doing their bit for the planet. These photos were taken in winter, just a few weeks before the solstice, and show how good orientation and passive solar design really allows winter sun to shine deep into the space, while the eaves will block the harsh summer sun.
